Do you have any smart appliances at home? If yes, you are tapping into the Internet of Things (IoT) world. You are one of those members of the IoT user base, which will take the industry to 17 billion connected worldwide by 2030. And if you are using IoT in your business applications, you might also contribute to making the enterprise IoT industry reach 24 billion connections by 2030.

IoT has become embedded in our routine lives and revolutionised how businesses operate. Some years ago, it was one of the significant buzz terms in the tech industry (just like the AI boom we are witnessing currently!). IoT is a mainstream ecosystem due to the rise of smart devices and their wide acceptance rate globally.

In this blog, we will explore the exciting IoT industry today. We will discuss its meaning, benefits, popular protocols, applications, and future scope. So, let’s dive in:

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

The Internet of Things, or IoT, is a network of connected devices that communicate with each other through the Internet. IoT devices are equipped with sensors and software and can be used in various applications, from household gadgets to industrial machines.

Many businesses now use IoT to streamline operations, provide better customer service, make smarter decisions, and boost their overall performance.

One key advantage of IoT is that it allows data to be shared across devices without direct human interaction. This means that devices can work together seamlessly to make our lives easier and businesses more efficient.

How Does IoT Work?

IoT systems work by collecting information from special sensors inside IoT devices. This data is then sent through a central hub (IoT gateway) for analysis by a program or system in the background.

For an IoT ecosystem to work, it needs these four elements:

Sensors or devices
These smart devices can connect to the Internet and gather data from their surroundings using built-in technology. They can measure temperature, detect movement, or monitor air quality.

Connectivity
IoT devices can connect over the internet through a network. They send the data they collect to an IoT gateway, a main information hub. Before reaching the IoT gateway, another device nearby may also check the data.

Data analysis
Only the essential data is used to find patterns, make suggestions, and catch potential problems before they become serious. When local devices analyse the data, it reduces the amount of data that has to be sent over the internet.

Sometimes, these devices communicate with each other and make decisions based on the information they share. Most of the time, they work without human intervention, but people can also interact with them, like setting up the devices or accessing the data they collect. How the devices connect and communicate depends on the specific IoT applications used. IoT can also leverage advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to make the data collected even more useful.

Graphical user interface
People use a graphical user interface (UI) to manage IoT devices. This can be a website or mobile app where they can interact with their smart devices.

Types of IoT Networks
The options to transfer data between IOT sensors and a web / mobile application through an IOT platform are numerous, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. There is no universal solution.

Wired & Short Range Wireless Networks
The first option is to wire the sensors. Or use short-range wireless networks. But of course, it does not offer a global scope and, therefore, remains very restrictive. In the context of wireless networks, we can consider:

  • WIFI: A significant energy consumer, it does not allow a realistic operation on batteries and needs to be better adapted to an industrial environment.
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth-enabled devices, known for their low energy and power consumption, are perfect for transferring data to the cloud when paired with other electronic devices. This network is especially useful in the retail industry, making operations smoother and more efficient.
  • Zigbee: Zigbee handles large data transfers with less power consumption due to its connectivity setup. You’ll often find Zigbee in smart homes and industrial applications, where robust data handling is essential.
  • Z-Wave: Z-Wave network uses two-way communication through mesh networking to tackle power issues. This low-cost wireless connectivity is a game-changer for home automation, enabling remote control and management of smart homes and buildings.

2G, 3G, 4G & 5G Networks
Up to now, to connect an object (like a machine or vehicle to know its status and location, or to interact with it, the only global solution—a global geographical coverage, national, even international—was to equip it with a SIM card and use the GPRS / 3G network of a telecom operator. The problems with this technology, commonly called M2M (Machine to Machine), are:

  • Costly hardware equipment: It is hardly possible to get a 3G modem on a budget
  • Too high power consumption, which in turn requires either a constant power supply or a high-capacity battery, which would make the dimensions of the sensor inappropriate for many applications
  • Large footprint
  • Non-negligible subscription costs for connectivity are linked to the necessity for a radio network that is dense and costly.

With M2M, it is difficult to connect small objects without an electrical power source or to accept that the sensor costs more than the connected object itself. Not to mention that it is undesirable for health, given the power of emissions, to carry a connected object in 3G 24 hours a day.

LPWAN – Low Power Wide Area Networks
LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technologies have emerged recently. This technology aims at proposing sensors that are:

  • Cheap
  • Small sizes
  • Battery-supported, with an incredible lifespan of 5-10 years!
  • Long Range

SigFox & LoRaWAN
Today, the two major players in IoT technology are SigFox and LoRa.

SigFox and LoRaWAN run on free ISM frequency bands. Thus, there is no need to acquire a licence. Though this frequency band is free, it requires compliance with a rule using less than 1% of the bandwidth, which explains why only a limited amount  of data can be transferred.

NB-IOT (Narrow Band IOT)
NB-IOT (Narrow Band IOT) is a traditional GSM operator’s answer to offering an LPWAN network. It is a recent development, an evolution of 4G (LTE) offering a low-power consumption solution with limited throughput based on an update of the current 4G network.

Although this solution has the benefit of country-wide coverage, seeing that it is an update of the current network, the energy consumption probably could be higher, and the sensors’ cost will be higher. Moreover, it is impossible to build a private network based on NB-IoT.

Benefits of IoT

The Internet of Things has made significant progress and undergone some major transformations. Its highly scalable nature and breadth of  applications make is suitable across a wide range of industries

The following are some significant advantages IoT offers:

Lowered Costs

IoT sensors can monitor and optimise resource usage in real-time. For instance, in manufacturing, sensors can track equipment performance and predict maintenance needs before breakdowns occur. This proactive approach minimises downtime, reduces repair costs, and extends the lifespan of expensive machinery.

Smart devices equipped with IoT can adjust energy consumption based on usage patterns and environmental conditions. This lowers utility bills and supports sustainability initiatives by reducing carbon footprints.

IoT devices streamline workflows and reduce labour costs. For example, logistics companies use IoT-enabled tracking systems to monitor shipments, optimise routes, and ensure timely deliveries, thereby reducing fuel expenses and labour hours.

Increased Efficiency and Productivity

Integrating IoT devices into workflows allows you to streamline processes that traditionally rely on manual intervention. You can collect data on performance metrics like temperature, pressure, and usage patterns. This data helps in proactive maintenance scheduling and automated adjustments, minimising downtime and optimising production schedules.

Through predictive analytics, ioT sensors can automate inventory management, reducing stock-outs and overages. This automation frees employees to focus on higher-value tasks, boosting overall productivity.

Furthermore, implementing IoT in smart buildings can help regulate energy consumption, monitor occupancy patterns, and enhance security systems. These outcomes can reduce utility costs, improve space utilisation, and increase employee safety.

Heightened Business Opportunities

IoT is not only enhancing existing business applications but also creating new opportunities to explore. Due to its advanced data collection and analysis capabilities, we can develop new business models and redefine traditional ones completely.

  • IoT sensors can collect various essential data, from user behaviour to equipment health, so you can find patterns and predict needs. A clothing company can use intelligent fitting rooms to gather customer preferences and sizing data. This helps personalise recommendations and optimise the product range.
  • With IoT, you can create new revenue streams through subscription-based services. For example, an appliance manufacturer can offer a service where they remotely monitor your refrigerator and proactively schedule maintenance checks – all for a monthly fee.
  • IoT devices can track vehicle speed and driving habits, helping insurance companies optimise their rates based on customer habits.
